Cultural Burn - UniSA

Cultural burning is a practice developed by the Aboriginal peoples that is an incredibly effective way of improving the health of Country by rejuvenating flora and fauna, as well as acting as a means of preventing catastrophic bushfires.

Topbunk had the privilege of working with UniSA and The South Australian Museum to document a series of burns on the land of the Narungga and Nukunu peoples on the Yorke Peninsula and Southern Flinders Ranges, led by Victor Steffensen and Firesticks.

It was thought provoking to learn about these ancient practices and how this knowledge can be integrated with current land management to reduce bushfire risk, provide employment and ultimately return the land to a healthy state.
